I den med spænding imødesete Simpson-film må Homer redde verden fra en katastrofe, som han selv har forårsaget. Da den rammer den lille soveby, Springfield, bliver Homer jaget vildt, og han og resten af familien må flygte over hals og hoved. Den miljøkatastrofe, som Homer har afstedkommet, er også et problem for USAs præsident Arnold Schwarzenegger og lederen af EPA (den amerikanske miljøstyrelse), Russ Cargill, som udtænker en djævelsk plan for, hvordan man inddæmmer katastrofen. Med Springfields og hele verdens skæbne på spil må Homer i gang med at redde situationen og dermed få genoprejsning “ og tilgivelse fra Marge og resten af familien, som er på opløsningens rand.
